New Faces

Question: Have you guys had any modern mythical beasties such as Nessie, Bigfoot, the Mothman, or the Chupacabra show up?

To date, not much really, no. Not because they're necessarily unreasonable for inclusion in Scion, because that's not the case, but mostly because there really wasn't any interest in them from our players, who tend to prefer ancient myths that tie to their character's pantheon more.

The very first game that John and I played in, when we were not the Storytellers (so a long time ago, y'all), the Mothman and Jersey Devil both made appearances, the latter being controlled by the former and terrifying a large stretch of the Pine Barrens. While the PCs managed to find the Devil's nest in the forest and scare it off, and the adventure itself was interesting, the ST didn't take much of a firm stance on what was actually going on and both antagonists sort of faded away into the background, which was pretty frustrating for some of the players. I think it may be difficult, sometimes, to run with modern myths and try to make them fit the world in context of ancient ones - they often don't have a really firm connection to older folklore, so you have to come up with some way to relate them to the world in which the PCs live without losing their unique flavor. We haven't repeated the experiment on our own.

It has recently been suggested, however, that Cuacitlali, Eztli's giant vampire-bat nahualli, is probably going to be the source of a whole new generation of chupacabra myths.
