Speculatin'

Question: So, Scion Origins. Thoughts? Opinions? Excitement? Speculations? (In case you don't know, the next Scion book coming out, as revealed on the Onyx Path Schedule on their Website.)

We do know, actually!

But we also can't tell you any thoughts or speculations on it. Because we're actually involved in Scion 2.0, we know about some things that are going to happen, but we aren't allowed to talk to any of you guys about it before it comes out. They made us sign in blood.

But you guys are free to theorize and speculate all you want in the comments!

  1. Hmmm...well given the name, I am gonna guess a supplement set in antiquity, getting to play around the time of famous Scions like Hercules or Gilgamesh ect. ect.

Just a thought though since each culture's heroes would be at different times in history it may not work.

    1. Oh that and good fluff in the beginning cause if they are smart they will have read the Fiction page and make that her domain cause she is amazing at it.

  4. I am guessing the replacement for Scion: Hero.
As in 'Origins of that awesome god you are going to become'
And I am wishing for a step away from the white wolf set up? having played White wolf games for... 8 or 9 years now (I started RPing with masquerade) I'd like some fresh air...

And I think there was something about John being neck-deep into the attributes?

  5. Hesitant Optimism.

I have a lot of hopes for the new edition of Scion, but what I realistically expect is something much better than the old Scion but will still require moderate house ruling. I am very excited for the involvement of GBN in this effort because I hope it means:

Research! You guys kick ass at research and I sincerely hope you are involved very heavily in this area. I want every single thing that involves mythic research that gets published to get the Anne & John stamp of approval.

Mechanics! I'll be perfectly honest and say that the GBN mechanics are pretty good but not overwhelmingly good. I really love some stuff, and put aside other stuff, and I think you guys expect no less. I definitely hope you get some input on the mechanics, because yours are superior to RAW even if I don't use all your crunch.

    1. I'm curious what an example of overwhelmingly good mechanics are. Explain?

    2. It sounds like you are looking for an opening to say that my examples are not overwhelmingly good to you. And that's perfectly fair. It's all a matter of opinion.

For example, I prefer mechanics to be rather straightforward and streamlined. They can be powerful, but they have to have few moving parts.

I find many knacks and boons and system mechanics written by John to have too many moving parts and require adding and subtracting too many small bonuses instead of just a few big bonuses. It can be downright byzantine for people who are not good at number crunching.

It reminds of 4th Edition D&D, where one of the biggest gripes is that there were so many powers and so many statuses that you needed 'power cards' to keep them straight, and a character or monster could have a dozen 'tokens' under his base just to keep track of it all.

Some people loved that about 4E! You might love that about your own game! I personally do not, I know a large number of people do not. So, while I am absolutely cool with you guys doing it in your own games, I hope those kinds of mechanics don't make it into the second edition of Scion.

    3. I was just curious and I see what you're saying, but I think it comes down to detail. Maybe it's because of how I visualize things in the game, but I like that aspect of it. It 's those little things that have saved my characters over and over again. I'm not sure you can create a balanced system that doesn't involve some decent number crunching. And John does love his math.
