The Song of My People

Question: As regards Theme Music: presumably, the player picks the song they think fits their character. But does the PC make that same choice consciously? Or does Fate just play DJ at the right/wrong moment, and "in character" the PC is stuck with it?

If you mean does the character say, “I think Mariah Carey really represents the inner me,” and thereafter “Hero” plays whenever he does anything important, then no, probably not. You’re consciously choosing a song out of character, but in character, the Scion is calling upon his awesome charismatic presence to make the hills around him come alive with song. He’s not orchestrating what song that is, just saying, “Hey, environment, celebrate me through music.” It’s always the same music because that’s his signature style, but he doesn’t consciously choose it during the game itself. It’s basically the same as when you decide to buy a particular boon; you know you’re choosing something out of character, but in character that Scion just knows he developed a new power, not that he chose between a couple.

Using the power itself, however, is a conscious decision on the Scion’s part, so he never needs to fear that it’ll turn on randomly when he doesn’t want it to. He activates the knack and cues up his Theme Music whenever he wants to be particularly impressive or socially interesting, the life of the party or the center of attention. He should know he’s doing it (barring him being exceptionally stupid when it comes to understanding powers), so he should also know better than to do it when it’s going to piss someone off or is a politically bad idea.

Of course, he can do it whenever he wants to, though. Some guys just have to walk into Zeus’ temple blaring “The Boys Are Back in Town” and face the consequences.

  1. What happens when two people use Theme Music in the same area?

    3. I stopped watching midway through Season 3. It was starting top feel like the 'Let's shit on Quinn Fabray' Hour.

    4. Opposed charisma presence rolls. Ties shut them both off. Something like that. Needs new rules.
Although, Ive had two people who use theirs on purpose together and work them together use them together before.

  2. How many relic dots to expand Theme Music to a tight genre? Because even gods get bored of the same song for a hundred years.

    1. But it's not about having ''an awesome song or songs your character likes'' its about having THE piece of music that represents your character to the fullest.
But yet, an entire Genre could be done with A LOT of Xp, about 10 for each song in the genre.

    2. Id say probably not. Especially from ancient times there werent many "genre's" per se. Its not game breaking, its just not as thematic.

    3. I mostly ask because my character has Theme Music, but everyone is sick and tired of hearing the song. It's no longer the "Cool Thing" and is now the "Lame Thing".

Alternatively, if not genre then how about a playlist? So a small number of songs play sequentially instead of the same song over and over again for hours?

    4. It sounds like maybe you're using your theme song too much? Geoff has had his for 3.5 years now and when it comes on it still has meaning.

How often do you use it? Its not meant to be something you abuse.

    5. You could just buy Theme Music more than once. Problem solved.

    6. I activate it every other game or so. Pretty much whenever a fight breaks out I activate theme music and then do not want.

    7. That is a definite yes then. That's not what the knack is for. I'm suprised other gods or characters hAvnt come told you to stop it like a kid who plays the same song on repeat In his room

    8. It's happened once or twice, but mostly it does not make sense to ask me to stop it. It's a fight, so if they are on our side they don't mind because it helps us win. If they are on the enemy side, then we're fighting them anyway so annoying them is not a huge deal.

  3. Is theme song restricted to having a SONG involved, or would an instrumental that hit the right notes and you really thought would fit your scion be an okay alternative?

    1. Any piece of music counts as a song for purposes of this boon. For example, James' Theme Music is the main theme from Swan Lake. :)
