Powers from the Future!

Question: Frost and Illusion, the two purviews introduced in Ragnarok, are incredibly light in terms of boon numbers. Do you have any ideas for other boons in those purviews?

Throw in Stars, too, which was introduced in the Yazata supplement. The three purviews have seventeen, sixteen and thirteen boons respectively, which puts them significantly below the beefier sets of parties in the game.

We do indeed have ideas for new boons in these purviews. We have ideas for all kinds of boons, but we haven't been working on them as a project since they seem to be unpopular in the voting. However, we can give you some idea teasers here, and you guys can either let them inspire you to lobby for more boons or use them as starting points to write your own.

Frost: For this purview, we're considering more powers involving temperature and environmental effects, imprisoning others in ice, or imparting spiritual chill rather than physical.

Illusion: For this purview, we're considering powers involving dreams and the creation or control thereof, effects that give longer lasting duration or permanence to illusions, glamours and mirages, or things that the illusionist can make use of as if they were real.

Stars: For this purview, we're considering powers that allow Scions to see through the stars, embody stars and constellations themselves, guide others, or create portents or signs in the heavens that can be seen by all.

So hopefully that will give you some idea of what we're thinking of, and some hope for the future of purviews. We're aware of which purviews need the most love, and we hope to give them that love someday soon.

  1. I so would love to see some more work boons, and frankly, the fact that Illusion would have more with to do with dreamweaving is a bit of a wet dream of mine. I'd love if APP's were a thing on the project list.

    1. We've had it on there on and off, but it never seems to get much love, oddly enough. But definitely something to bring up again in the future!

  2. These are all Purviews I love and want to see new powers for...sadly, new Knacks and Boons are unlikely to ever win the polls, given the sheer shininess (for lack of a better term) of the other projects on the polls. I know, much as I love Stars, I'd never choose it over, say, new Titanrealms.

By the way, I was going through the Frost Purview recently when I noticed that the Frost Beast boon talks about Firedrakes and a Sub Zero Boon, neither of which is a thing. Also, Hippocratic Oath/Vow of Pestilence still references Cradlesong, which doesn't exist any more.

    1. Holy moly! Thank you, what awful blunders those are. Geoff has that boon and has used it. How did we not notice that?

and new boons might appear sooner rather then later, maybe.

    2. Happy to help :) You were probably blinded by his beauty.

Is that a teaser for the Secret Project?

Something else that's been bugging me lately: Appropriated Vigil, over in Guardian, states that you can take over the Vigil Brands placed by anyone you're Fatebound to. You can only be Fatebound to mortals, who by definition cannot use Vigil Brand. At first I thought it might have been there to account for Grant Akh, but a. You can't use Grant Akh on someone Fatebound to you anyway, and b. Grant Akh makes the mortal Legendary, which dispels Fatebonds anyway. Is there some extreme case that I'm missing here?

(If that last question is better suited for the Questionado, lemme know, I'll send it in. This observation has gotten me very curious.)

    3. No, no, you're fine. Actually, you can be Fatebound to non-mortals; they just don't give you Fatebond penalties or bonuses, and the Fatebond just ensures that you'll be in one anothers' stories. It's mainly there to make sure you only take on Vigil Brands from people you know - so Geoff can take on Sangria's Vigil Brands or even Huitzilopochtli's Vigil Brands, but not those of someone he's never met like Hachiman.

    4. But it is a little bit of a clumsy mechanic, IMO, since it forces the ST to keep track of Legendary FBs that otherwise don't matter much... so it could probably stand a look at rewriting.

    5. ohh... that's what Tezcatlipoca did as one of the gifts to Geoff? fatebound their band together?
What other ways makes you become fatebound to a legendary being? i assume you do not roll for every legend spent?

      Delete
    6. Technically, it works the same way as mortal Fatebonds in terms of rolling when Legend is spent, but most Storytellers don't bother. It's easier to just say, "They've spent a lot of Legend around one another and they're Legend 5+, they're Fatebound to some degree" and leave it at that. Bands are almost always super Fatebound to one another, and usually also to their divine parents and other gods they interact with a lot.

Tezcatlipoca used the Sanctify Band spell in the Magic purview on Geoff and his band. :) It's basically just a super version of Fatebinding them.

    7. stretching the relevance once again...
Sangria, did she use Visage great and terrible to become beautifull for Geoff? He thought that it was ''like something Sofia used before to make herself more beautiful'' but she was already positive, right?
Which made me confused as to which knack/boon was used :P

    8. She did indeed use Visage Great & Terrible. Sangria was frightening in appearance before that, which is what Geoff is often describing when he says she's unsettling to look at. She's pretty much always positive now because Geoff gets upset when she switches, but she still sometimes goes scary for combat situations.

Sangria invested in a lot of new things after he rmarriage to Geoff in order to try to make it work; Visage was one of them, along with Guardian and Health powers she'd never had before. She's not great at emotions, but she still made a conscious effort to try to make sure her family was taken care of.

    9. "You like this," she said in the same flat voice, no emotion whatsoever relieving the stark beauty of her face. "When the Greek woman did it."
sangria said, I remembered wrong, it was not Geoff comparing it to Sofia, it was me doing so, as the is the only greek woman in their party. But i assume it was another greek that did it then?
      And did Huitzilopochli wink?

      Delete
    10. Aha! She meant Circe. :)

Yes, indeed he did. Huitzilopochtli is all about his daughter, but even he knows she can't be a lot of fun to live with, so he supports Geoff looking for ways for the two of them to be happy together. (Also, he's an old-school Aztec sexist and has lots of patriarchal old notions about a wife's job being to please her husband etc. etc., so Geoff's worries that he would be mad about him mind-whammying her were mostly unfounded.)

      Delete
    11. So circe is usually divinely terrifying and used visage to become attractive for Geoff?

Awesome, Sorry for the off-topic questions, i just get so curious when there's something i don't know.

      Delete
    12. No, Circe's always beautiful. But she used her Appearance powers to turn into a beautiful version of Sangria to try to tempt Geoff, so Sangria figured that was what Geoff probably wanted her to look like.

    13. Don't be sorry, I like talking about the stories. I'm vain that way. :)

    14. Ahh, thats what it all drew upon!
I feel so satisfied that i know now, so thank you for the answers :)
And i'll keep finding loopholes whenever a blog allows me to slightly stretch the subject into what i don't quite understand how happened in the stories.

  3. Prophecy scoffs at all of your over-10-boons Purviews and judges you silently from the corner!

Honestly, Prophecy is my favorite purview, thematically, and I've been trying to make it more attractive for my games... But it's probably the hardest to make new boons for! At least new boons that fit its theme and aren't just dice adders, ugh dear Fate pls help.

  6. Whenever New Boons and Knacks appear, I vote for them. Mainly because I think it's probably one of those projects that would be good for your game, and the one most easily used by anyone who uses your rules.

  7. If I'm not mistaken, John said in a vlog that the secret project was about boons...
