Book Club: Great Hunt 1

I promised not to clog up the blog to much with my new book club project.  So this is just a quick note to say updates will be every wednesday night(sometimes more frequently if something interesting forces me to make a video).

So just remember you'll need to check that on youtube because there wont be a regular post about it.  For anyone who hadnt heard about it yet, its a new video series where I(and maybe you) read a bunch of new books and mine them for scion materials.  We're starting with the Great Hunt and the group votes on each new book as they come up.  Very excited about the project, and still looking for a name.

    3. Im not really surprised anon? I said in another thread that I was pretty sure it was going to happen. It happens every time. Although Im not sure what that has to do with this post.

Also something to think on though. We just put out a new supplement, and our daily traffic jumps by around 500% for about a week when that happens. So it could be that.

    4. Cool, if cheating actually counts then I'll throw a hundred votes towards my preferred winner when we get closer to deadline.

    5. That's not what he said and you know it. You're entitled to express legitimate concerns about the process, but you're not helping anyone by threatening to game the system as well in an attempt to force us to take it down.

We've heard you guys talking about there being problems, and are talking about how to address them. Adding to the problem or trying to force our hand will not help you.

    6. See, this is why anons cant have nice things.

    7. He suggested that those 60 votes were legit because you recently put out a supplement. In the span of an hour and a half. When no other option moved more than a couple of votes during that time. In the span of an hour of a half.

    8. And that translates to 'clearly this means I should flood the votes during endgame' how exactly?

You're cause is noble but you're beginning to remind me of Miko Miyazaki.

    9. If the results are dramatically corrupt then the only options are to hope that John and Anne come to a fair solution, or accept that corruption wins.

    10. I did not. I suggested that traffic was higher to the site then its been in months these past few days and that is a factor to consider.

    11. Seems like a ton of work to cheat a few hundred poll results if they might not be used anyway cause of cheating.

    12. If you are not suggesting that the higher traffic may mean those votes are legit, then what are you suggesting?

It only takes about an hour to set up a voting macro.

      Delete
    13. Im suggesting exactly what I just said.
And your hour set up voting macro would also need to reset your ip address.
Im watching the pole though, go ahead and show me. I'll be up for an hour.

    14. You're just confusing me now.

You don't need to wait up for an hour. Just please do something about this that does not involve letting the corrupted results stand.

    15. That's fine. You accomplished getting us to consider what the best solution might be by asking us about it.

Further spoofing the poll results in an attempt to force us into getting rid of them is not asking for us to make a decision; it's bullying. It's negating everyone else's legitimate votes along with the cheated ones, and it's trying to force us into making the decision you want instead of letting us decide the best course of action for our site and projects. Cut it out.

      Delete
    16. Everything you are describing has already been done by someone else, and all the legitimate votes have already been negated. None of the spoofing was me.

    17. I'm glad none of it was you. But you threatened to do so because you thought you weren't getting your way when it comes to how to handle the situation, based on misinterpreting what John said, and that's not any more acceptable. So don't.

    18. If it becomes clear that cheating is the most effective currency, then that is the currency people will pay with.

    19. That's a swerve and it's not what we're talking about.

You decided, of your own free will, to say, "You're not responding to the situation the way I want? I will become part of the problem." We're telling you not to do that, because it's bullshit, it's bullying, it's unhelpful, and it's not going to result in anything good. You're not going to win any argument defending it. Stop now.

      Delete
    20. There is nothing to defend. If you allow the cheating to stand, then that is what is going to happen.

    21. Commentaries on human nature might have been what you were talking about, but it sure as hell isn't what she was talking about. She, and John, have repeatedly said that they're considering the situation that you've brought up, and requesting that you not go to the extreme step of cheating the polls yourself as you very clearly threatened to do.

By contrast you have been repeatedly harping on the same fact: People are cheating the polls. We KNOW that. If you go down to the earlier discussion you will note that other people also know that. None of them are using that as an excuse to threaten John and Anne. None of them are behaving like lone fortresses of Virtue in a blond world. So stop behaving like one of those Twihaters who seems to think he's the only person in the whole universe who dislikes Twilight.

Continuously repeating the same line like a broken record (and that is precisely wha you have been doing) until someone gives in out of sheer exasperation is the behaviour of a petulant child. Do not be surprised if people treat you like one if you continue to behave in this manner.

    22. It's becoming clear to me that you don't understand what I'm talking about. I'll clarify it for you.

      1) You, and others, mentioned that the voting system is having problems, that cheating is possible, and that you are concerned it is making the system not work. This was good.
      2) We said that we are glad you mentioned it, that we do need to think about what to do about it, and that we have to take into account all perspectives on the issue. This is also good.
      3) You decided, without us ever confirming that we had committed to any course of action yet, that you didn't think we were going to handle it the way you wanted. You responded by declaring you were going to start cheating and forcing the issue, so that we would have to either accept rampant cheatery or take the whole system down. That was not good. That was outright bullying, an attempt to force us to have no choice but to do exactly what you want, and a complete negation of the votes and opinions of people who did not agree with you. You decided, based on nothing but your assumption of what we might do, that you got to take that decision away from us by forcing the issue.
      4) We called you out on your bullshit and told you to stop.
      5) You responded by claiming that you somehow have no choice, and it's all the system's fault, despite the fact that you made a conscious decision to be a jackass here.

We are all aware that the current voting system has problems and that a change needs to be made. That was established a long time ago in various threads. We have said that we are looking into it, and we have asked for feedback from you guys, some of whom have asked for no voting, some of whom have said they like things as they are, and everything in between.

By saying that if we don't do what you want, you're going to start contributing to the problem, you're not helping anyone. You're blatantly trying to force us to make a change that caters to your preferences by saying that you'll make the system 100% useless if we don't. You're hypocritically adding to the problem, intentionally and knowingly, and trying to pretend that that isn't your fault. And, worst of all, you're throwing this monumental tantrum before we have ever told you what we plan to do. You have no idea what we're going to do, because we haven't told you. You just independently decided it wouldn't be what you want, and are now threatening that if we make a decision other than the one you want, you will go out of your way to try to worsen it.

That is bullshit. You need to stop. If the system rewards being an asshole, that doesn't somehow magically make you not an asshole for taking advantage of it. And threatening preemptively to be an asshole before you even know what is going on is not only obnoxious, it's stupid.

So stop. We have been told there is a problem, and we are talking about how to deal with the problem. All you're doing right now is actively being a jerk, for literally no reason. You're not convincing us to do what you want. You're just convincing us that we don't want to talk to you.

    23. John suggested that website traffic might have been the reason for the sudden surge of votes. This makes it sound like he thinks those votes might be legit and may let them count.

I called him out on his bullshit. I said if cheating actually counts then I see no reason not to cheat.

If that makes me an asshole, bullshitting, bullying, childish, decision stealing, harping, hypocritical, jackass, monumental temper tantrum throwing, petulant, and stupid then so be it.

    24. Yes, he did. And he should. We need to take into account all the evidence and possibilities here, and that includes the fact that we know there was more traffic this week and that there might therefore have been more legitimate votes as well. It would be as irresponsible to ignore that as to ignore the suspicious voting activity at other times that people have brought to our attention.

That's not bullshit, my friend. We want to avoid cheating, but we also don't want to disenfranchise everyone who's not. All you're calling him out on is paying attention to the entire picture.

You are not the only noble person with the guts and smarts to point out and fight against corruption in a blog poll, and you are not justified in resorting to strong-arm tactics. We understand your concerns and we want to address, but they are not the only concerns at work here. And you need to decide whether you trust us to make intelligent informed decisions based on everyone's input and the entire situation, because your behavior is telling us that you don't, and that makes us unsure why you are even hanging out here in the first place.

  4. This Anon brings up another concern.
With all respect for all the Anons out there that does not want their name known or google to have their info, or whatever other reason that one might have to not want to make an account. It should probably be considered to make it impossible to comment if one is not a registered user, so that people can be banned for toxic behaviour.
Right now, it is not my opinion that it has become a problem in general, but if further comment sections end out like this one with random Anons making toxic behaviour, then it might be a preferable solution to people having their days ruined. Especially because i'm sure noone here wants the people that GIVES US FREE STUFF! to become depressed over people whining over the fact that it was not the FREE STUFF they wanted.
and not simply whining, sometimes its okay to express concern that you'd wish it had been differently. I do that too, often. But from there and to directly biting the hand that feeds? That is a sad sad thing to do.

    2. If it is worth anything, I do not think the anon in this thread has been any more or less toxic than your average internet forum poster. In fact, this was pretty tame.
