Music of the Spheres

Question: Do you guys think that a Music or Sound based purview would be mythically resonant enough to be permissible in Scion's landscape? And if yes, which gods would you associate with this purview?

You know, we're actually pretty split on that. John tends more toward no, I tend more toward yes; we both think it could probably be done, but that it would be difficult. Certainly it would need to be a Music purview, not a Sound purview - there are plenty of gods of art and music, but gods of noise are not a thing and that's just an example of trying to stretch the concept past where it needs to go - but we're on the fence about it. Music is one of those things that it's hard to quantify; is it enough of a huge cosmic concept to be an APP? It seems like it lacks the power level of most other APPs, but then again it's a universally important concept for both deities and human cultures, so it certainly makes a stronger showing than some other candidates for new purviews we've heard of. It seems to me that, like Illusion or Guardian, it could be one of those purviews that is universal enough to be mythically resonant across all gods despite not being one of the giant underpinnings of the universe like Fire or Water.

I'd actually really like to work on a Music purview someday. I think it would be really neat. But, as you can see from our work queue over on the right, we have a lot going on already, so we'll probably wait until there's a strong need for it or we've cleared some of these pressing things, like pantheon rewrites, off our decks.

As far as who'd be associated with it, off the top of our heads we'd say Aengus, Apollo, Bragi, the Dagda, Hathor, Sarasvati and Xochiquetzal are all possibilities.

  1. I'm personally on the fence on this one. Where I think it would be cool to have a Music purview, there is a nagging part of my brain saying no. The main reason why is there is stuff from different purviews that you can stunt with music or get unique powers on relics for you to do this. An Electric Guitar with Sky, Pan's flute with chaos(possible, still working on that one), an Opera singer singing as she summons a legion of zombies to do her bidding and much more.

For that reason alone, I have to say no for now, unless you can give me specific tales about music that does a power not explained by other purviews. If you can do that, I will eat my words. That and the first side of my brain is already going for a spoon to do so.

  2. The Choir: The supreme aspect of all mankinds efforts to impose order, stability and beauty on the random noise of the universe. The Choir can be whatever the individual wishes. One person can hear chamber music while the person next to him hears rock n roll. The choir can also produce sounds so high it can strike even gods deaf for a time and sounds so low it can crack the earth. Anyone who faces the Choir and thinks it’s music is harmless is a fool.

  3. All of music/sound can be summed up into charisma/manipulation.

Perhaps adding some more music/sound related knacks that turns the concept into a tool but not a purview.

    1. By that logic, all of War and Guardian can be summed up into Strength/Dexterity.

    2. I disagree but understand what your saying.

Let's run down the music myths.

Siren's Call: That's essentially Meet me Backstage with music thrown in for flavor. (also that doesn't exist anymore)

Apollo's Lyre: I'm pretty sure that's "Who Me?"

Melpomene. She's a muse. She inspires people to sing which falls under Instant Seminar.

There's Orpheus' tale, but honestly the description lends itself more to Perfect Actor then to the music itself.

Then there's Orpheus' brother Linus who, again, used Instant Seminar.

Then Pan with his pipes. Again it comes across as a stunt more than a world staple.

      ...

And that's just SOME of the greeks.

Music is prevalent in every culture and it's deeply important but i don't see how it can make the move from tool to express what isn't expressible by words (and perhaps there is their limitation) to a truly epic power that is beyond humanity.
