The Scion Identity

Question: What is your take on "off the wall" ideas for a Scion chronicle? For example, I'm planning to storytell a game in the near feature that is a spy thriller, where each of the PCs are former operatives from the various worldwide intelligence agencies (CIA, DGSE, GIS, ect.) and they are recruited into an intelligence network devised by the gods to gather intelligence on the Titans and undertake operations against Titanspawn. Basically, the chronicle is called "The Scion Identity".

Actually, I don't think that's too off-the-wall, really - Scions are the footsoldiers and hands of their parents, and that means they get to wear a lot of hats. They don't all have to be running-into-battle types, and I'm sure some of the more brainy or sneaky gods are all about having some of their kids on recon and spy duty. The name's a bit cheesy, but Scion lives on cheesy fun, so run with it and enjoy it.

The only thing I'd watch out for is that you may have trouble keeping the challenge level up for this chronicle as the Scions go up in Legend; information-gathering ramps up very, very quickly for Scions, particularly if any of them decide to get the Mystery purview (and I imagine, if their job entails finding out secret information, some of them will probably want to). Computers and codes are no mystery to Scions with a few choice Intelligence knacks, and you may find that keeping secrets from the PCs gets very difficult very quickly.

Which doesn't mean you should try to cockblock their powers - that wouldn't be much fun for them! Instead, when we really want there to be a mystery that is hard for PCs to unravel, we usually layer a few different red herrings, mysterious pieces of information and possibilities over each other, so that even if they discover something they often don't get the big picture because it doesn't occur to them to dig deeper for a while. If you're basing your plans on the Bourne series, you have a great template for levels of intrigue and mystery anyway, so keep doing what you're doing and good things will come. (And hey, if they figure it out ahead of schedule, tell them they're awesome and move on to the next thing. Sometimes players are just more awesome than the plot, and in Scion, that's totally okay.)

I'm imagining all kinds of juicy counter-spying and terrorism from Titanspawn antagonists now. Sounds like fun - good luck!
