Grades, Tiers and Classes of Coolness

Question: Off the top of your head, could I please get a quick list of notable gods you think would be Legend 11? Legend 10? Legend 9? Just a handful to compare would be great!

Oh, jeez. I want to help you out, friend, I really do, but there is no "off the top of our heads" when it comes to figuring out Legend ratings of gods. Those decisions are made based on time-consuming research into the cults, legends and behaviors of each individual god, and we wouldn't feel right throwing names out there without first doing the work to support them.

But there are a few we've already established in the past, so let me throw those in a big bowl and mix them up for you! Brigid, Sif and Dian Cecht are good examples of Legend 9 gods; we know who they are and they were clearly important at some point, but they have few surviving Legends or specialize in only a single power, making them far less powerful and renowned than gods of higher Legend rating. To go up the scale a little bit, gods like Amphitrite, Ariadne or Heracles are in the neighborhood of Legend 10; they have more stories of their exploits or clearly demonstrated powers, as well as greater cult presences, but they still can't compete with the Legend 12 big boys. Legend 11 is a tricky tier to navigate, but I'd point to Neith as a good example of a Legend 11 goddess; she's large and in charge, has a real cult and some clearly-defined powers and roles, but she lacks the magic combination of power and fame that would catapult her all the way to the top by just a little bit.

In our experience, there are more Legend 10 gods than any other rating; that seems to be the area that most minor gods fall into, with enough powers and stories not to be forgotten but not enough to really be comparable to the Legend 12 powers of the pantheons. There are fewer well-known Legend 9 gods, possibly because they're walking the skinny edge between being remembered and being totally forgotten as deities, but there are tons of them that are simply a name and epithet or a face painted on a piece of artwork. And there are also comparatively few Legend 11 gods, as most either fall into the category of Totally Legend 12 or Obviously Legend 10, with little crossover into the middle.

I hope that helps in your comparisons (you can also take a look at our previous posts about determining Legend rating in gods). It's a big job that involves a lot of work, so good luck out there and pack a lunch.
