A Rain from the East

Question: Do you know of any Japanese kami, preferably associated with the weather, which might be missing a body part or some other Relic-appropriate object? My idea (seeing as I’m having trouble finding a Relic through which to channel the Sky purview for my Polynesian Scion that doesn’t require him to possess an item associated a violent domestic god [foreign is alright though, as it makes for some interesting politicking down the road]) is to have his divine parent gift him with an old trophy from WWII.

Hmm, didn't I see you over on the White Wolf forums? If not, wow, kami body parts have taken quite a surprising upswing in the Scion market lately! If so, you may have already gotten some ideas there, but we'll take a swing at it!

There are several sky-aligned Japanese gods that you might be able to scalp a relic from, depending on what your Storyteller is interested in. You don't necessarily need a body part (though if you want one, by all means, you can certainly get one), since anything belonging to a Japanese god could theoretically have been liberated in the spoils of war. In no particular order:

Fujin. One of the nastier of the Japanese gods, Fujin is a terrible ogre-monster who commands the winds. His most famous relic is the giant bag he carries, which contains within it all the winds and which he can open to let them out to wreak havoc at will. While it's much too large and powerful a relic to be suitable for Scions who are not yet gods themselves, your character might have a bit of cloth from the bag, or a length of thread, easily giving access to the Sky purview. Such an object could be worked into any item of clothing that would fit the Scion's imagery, from being woven through clothing that seems exceptionally light and airy to being worn as a hair tie that makes their hair always blow dramatically as if in a wind, even when the air is still. He's also said to wear a leopard skin, which your Scion's parent might have appropriated as a trophy. I could definitely see one of his stray winds (maybe more of a breeze) being a fun Follower or Guide as well, depending on how you played it. Fujin has no particularly famous body parts, but, being an ogre, things like hideous fingernails or teeth are always a possibility.

Raijin (Raiden). Raijin, Fujin's brother, is his sky-god counterpart, in charge of thunder and storms instead of driving winds. Where Fujin has his bag of winds, Raijin has a set of enormous taiko drums, and his drumming is said to be what makes the overpowering noise of thunder. Again, this is a hefty god-level relic and not something I'd give to a starting Scion, but any bit of the drums could be a possibility - perhaps some hide from a punctured drum, or a stolen drumstick, or whatever else you can think of that a god might hand to a prized child. Raijin also doesn't really have any famous body parts to mess with, but he has the same ogreish attributes, and since he's a famous eater of belly buttons, the irony of doing something with Raijin's own belly button (or one he stole from someone else) might be a fun choice.

Tenjin. This guy's a lot of fun; he's one of the few kami that is obviously and recognizably a former Scion himself, having been a mortal politician who was deified after his death. Unlike the unruly ogre-gods, he's a more benevolent figure, capable of visiting natural disasters on the populace but generally revered more for his connections to poetry and scholarship. He also lacks particular body parts you could steal (though perhaps you could liberate a piece of poignant poetry or other bit of writings?), but he has a particularly sacred cherry-tree that still grows in Japan that legend claims he moved to flower at his shrine, so petals, branches or roots borrowed from that might be good relic options.

Once you've got a relic trophy in mind, sit down and figure out what kind of imagery and style your Scion has, and then work that trophy into what he's already got going on. Since he's obviously not Japanese, it's more of a matter of taking that thing and making it your own than worrying about how the original Japanese god used it, so be creative!

That is indeed me on the Scion forums. I'm just trying to get as many ideas together as possible. I think that I have settled on Raiden's belly button. The problem is I don't have any idea on what to do with it. I thought about making it into a belly button ring, but my scion is a bit older and probably wouldn't have one of those. Do you have any ideas on what kind of item that I could fashion the belly button into?

    1. Could you tell us a little more about your Scion? The more we know about his personality and behavior, the better we can try to think up relics for him. (It might help stimulate your creative juices, too!)

He is a Scion of Tangaroa and he has access to the Animal (Lizard), Death, Magic, Psychopomp and Sky purviews. The other relics that I have planned for him are: Whalebone Hei Matau (Relic 5: 3 Boons (Night Eyes (Darkness 1), The Subtle Knife (Illusion 1) and Water Breathing (Water 1) and 2 Purviews (Death and Psychopomp).
Curled lizard tattoo on the back of his neck (Relic 5: 2 Boons (Uncanny Intuition (Mystery 1 (using the Scion Quick Reference house ruled Mystery purview) and Minor Visions (Prophecy 1), 2 Purviews (Animal (Lizard) and Magic) and 1 dot Unique (Tattoo).
He tends to focus on his physical attributes (Strength, Stamina and Dexterity, in that order), followed by his mental (Intelligence, Perception and Wits) and then his social (Appearance and Manipulation, Charisma being his so called "dump stat").

    3. Ooh, can we take a moment to talk about how useful it is to stick The Subtle Knife on a relic? Because seriously, I may have to swipe that idea.

    4. Oh, good call - it's a relic that is never inconveniently there unless you want it to be! It slips through security, carries through customs, and can pop out of nowhere to dumbfound friends and enemies alike at a moment's notice! Also helps you hide drinks at the movie theatre.

Ah, I remember you mentioning this guy before, Roy. All good info, but could you add anything about his personality? Is he playful, serious, a vigilante, an artist, what? :)

Good point. I probably should have done that first.
He's a pretty laid back guy who is fairly intellectual (a planned Epic Intelligence of 7 at the very least) and is a huge comic book nerd. He is older than your average Scion (59) but is just as physically able (due to some Health boons administered by his father at his visitation and a high Epic Stamina). He is a veteran of the Vietnam War (in the Marines) and has since taken up a position as a history professor at the University of Hawaii at Maui. He has retired (due to his physical condition before his visitation) and is ready to adventure. He has Calling: Superhero/Culture Hero and Nature: Gallant. I plan to invest heavily in Courage, Endurance and Expression. Not so heavily in Conviction (not because he has no conviction but because he doesn't like telling others what to do. He is fairly tall (6' 3") and heavy (215 lbs.).

      Also.
He is a mutt. He is mostly of Maori descent but also has Scottish, Hawaiian, Japanese and Samoan blood in him (in that order: approximately 13 parts Maori, 7 parts Scottish, 5 parts Hawaiian, 3 parts Japanese and 1 part Samoan). He is well aware of his heritage and is proud of it (this is besides his divine heritage of course).

    7. Okay, interesting. Because he's at least a small percentage Japanese, he might be able to work some of that angle more than I originally thought.

Try coming at this from a different angle - what kind of relic do you want? A skilled smith can turn your bit o' Raijin into anything, pretty much, so what would he like to have? Does he want a scholarly university book with pages that look suspiciously like blue ogreskin? Does he want a gun hearkening back to his days in the war, perhaps with a little bit of an exceptionally thunderous boom when he fires it? Start with what kind of toy you'd like him to have, and then you can start finding ways to work your Japanese trophy into it if you're not interested in the trophy itself being the star of the relic show.

I would eventually like to have a pair of flintlock pistols (harkening back to the musket wars of Maori history) with oni horn hammers (one from Raijin and one from Fujin).
For the moment I think I'm going to go with something like this: Red Jade Ring made from Raijin’s Navel (Relic 3: 2 Boons (Sky’s Grace (Sky 1) and Weather Witch (Sky 1) and 1 Purview (Sky).
It's small and easy to transport while being out of the way. I'm figuring that my character won't know that it's Raijin's navel. That will be interesting when Raijin figures it out.

    1. Heh, I like the mystery of your character being clueless about his relic's origin. The sins of the fathers indeed.

Is there a particular reason you put Sky's Grace and Weather Witch on the ring directly, though? You're obviously going to be buying Sky boons and focusing on Sky as a major purview - why blow relic points on something you can get independently? At the very least, you'll lose them if you ever don't have the relic on you, which would be very embarrassing for a sky god, and if you ever do pick them up you're just out some wasted relic points.

To be perfectly honest (and this is kind of embarrassing) I couldn't think of anything else to put on it and I didn't want it to be just a 1 dot Relic. I thought about putting a Guardian boon or two on it, but I find the Guardian purview to be lackluster (this is due to the idea, not your particular treatment of it).
Perhaps I should just stick with the Relic of the hostile sky god of my own pantheon (and by hostile I mean titan aligned). Although it would be difficult to lug a god-stick around (and even more so to explain it to customs).

Perhaps I should just be candid. This hostile native sky god is Tāwhirimātea.

    4. What it should do, being from raiden.

Is sky boons as extra dice(or autos for more points) to appearance rolls(or presence rolls).

Or switching appearance in for an attribute on a sky boon roll.

Your ST lets you get a ton of relics. Thats like demigod level relic points for my games.

Basically Id look at all the shit raiden is good at, and make some combo of it that works for your character.

    5. Another good raiden type one would be a big boost to one of(or all of) the thunder boons.
