Stop Picking On Me!

Question: My Storyteller is a sadist. What do I do?

Well... without more information than that, we really can't help you, unfortunately.

What is it your Storyteller does that makes you feel that he's too harsh - does he kill off all your characters? Inflict trauma on them for no reason you can think of? Does she make people uncomfortable or upset out of character, and seem to take pleasure in doing so? Are you just feeling like the challenges are too hard or the adventures too overwhelming? What exactly do you mean by "sadist"?

We'd love to help you out, but you'll need to give us some more specifics - either in the question box, or here in the comments - about what things you're having problems with before we'll be able to give you any meaningful advice.

All we can say is that if you truly think your ST is a sadist - that is, they just want to make you, the player, suffer and you can't have any fun - then you probably ought to either ask them to stop or quit playing in that game. If it's something else, elaborate a bit for us and we'll try to help.

  1. Having dealt with Storytellers that made me uncomfortable, players that made me uncomfortable and having been told that I was making a player uncomfortable... the best plan is honesty.

If you are not happy with how your GAME (something done for entertainment and fun) is going, you need to speak up honestly and voice your concerns. It may be that the other person is not even aware they're causing you distress.

Now if the Storyteller knows you're unhappy and is continuing in their behavior, then you are probably best off leaving the group. I've had to do that, too. It sucks, but it's better than spending your free time in an unenjoyable situation when you're theoretically playing a game. Once again, games are for fun. They should be fun for everyone involved.

The question sounds suspiciously like the setup to the story of Old Man Henderson - The Man Who "Won" Call of Cthulhu...
Let us hope the questioner doesn't make another abomination like Old Man Henderson. The world of Scion would never recover.

    1. Out of curiosity I looked up and read the tales of Old Man Henderson. I get why the player wanted to make the character, but I have no idea why any ST in their right mind would allow such a ridiculous and blatant Gary Stu. Hilarious shenanigans nonetheless.
