Monkey of Mayhem

Hey, did you guys need a frankly terrifying dystopian cyberpunk animated version of the story of Sun Wukong? I have one for you!

The movie's title translates as The God Hunter, and it is supposed to see release in China next year. Exciting!

  1. The Chinese title seems to translate to something along the lines of "Western Journey Later Chronicle." Curious if "later" is used in the sense that this is set after the novel or in the sense that it is a later retelling of the same tale.

    1. Well, that's what I get for trusting the internet's translation. :) Maybe "God Hunter" is the proposed title for English release?

That is totally a good question! I don't know, but I want to find out.

    2. The studio's site can't seem to decide between God Hunters and The God Hunter, but that seems about right. Regardless, the same site states that it's set after Journey to the West.

    3. I'm really excited!! And 后传 could mean "later chronicle" yeah, or more simply as sequel. It sounds more like a story happening after the Journey to the West. The trailer also supports this, unless they ditched Tangshen and his other 3 buddies to focus solely on Wukong...

    4. The studio's list of characters includes Sanzang, Wuneng, and Wujing, so I'm guessing that the movie isn't going to omit them to focus on Wukong. It also includes Erlang, though I'm not sure about his role in the plot. I saw a blog claiming that Wukong is being sent to hunt him, but that doesn't seem to be mentioned on the studio's site.

Regardless, a Erlang/Wukong re-match sounds fun. Kind of a shame that Erlang was never written up in Scion.

  2. I want to see Sun Wukong and Ryujin bike together, like cross-pantheon badasses!

  3. And here I thought that this one was going to be an answer to the question I submitted a while back about what the Shen would think of the new Donnie Yen Monkey King movie: on the one hand, it's a (relatively?) accurate retelling of one of their major stories; on the other hand, it's a retelling of the story of how the Monkey King kicked all their asses and wrecked all their shit!
