Wake Me Up Inside

Question: Could a god have an awakened Scion perform Visitation on an unawakened one? For example, Odin sending a daughter of Freyr who's been active for a few years to perform aVisitation for one of his children?

Sure could. All a Visitation needs is for the parent to send somebody - themselves, their fellow gods, their servants, their monsters, their other magic kids, whatever - to go drop off a new kid's relics and give them as much of an idea of what they are and what they're supposed to do as that god wants them to have. That could be another Scion just as easily as it could be another god in the pantheon or a lesser immortal like an alf or tengu.

So yeah, go for it! If you're making a new character and want a big brother or sister to come do the honors, there's no reason you can't. And if you're a Storyteller, you can send your PCs off to perform Visitations as part of the game's plot, possibly sparking new relationships along the way.

  1. This actually raises a question from me: Is it possible for a Scion to have an accidental Visitation? Like, let's say an unvisited Scion manages to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. The unvisited Odin Scion is having breakfast at the waffle cart when all of a sudden, Freyr's daughter's fight with a team of fire giants comes through. The unknowing Odinson gets taken hostage, the more experienced Scion saves him, heals his wounds, maybe tells him what the hell just happened (or reveals enough that the newbie can extrapolate) then goes on her merry way. Could that act as the Visitation?

    1. I think receiving your birthrights is the actual defining moment of the Visitation itself. If the Odinson didn't really get any birthrights (unless Freyr's daughter is considered a 3-dot guide of sorts) then I don't think he's really visited. That's just my two cents though.

    3. The original books imply that you can have an accidental awakening from that kind of thing when they talk about how you're probably going to die as a result because you won't have any Birthrights and Titanspawn will probably come preemptively kill or try to recruit you. I know some games like to do that sort of "suddenly a hero" thing.

We don't do that, though. As Jacob says, being granted your important item is a major part of the Hero's Journey, plus, even if the Scions don't really know what's going on, we still want them to have that sparking visit from someone to put them on the road to heroic deeds. It might not necessarily be the parent, but it's still usually an important moment in the early story.

    4. I've seen a very small number of characters who only started with Guides. Not even birthrights to channel their relics or talk to their guides (they plan to pick those up later).
