Ragnarok 2012: The Movie (Part 4)

Question: You're given unlimited funds to produce a movie based on Ragnarok. Who do you hire to direct? Who do you cast as which gods? Where do you film? And how about a film score?

And here we are, finally, with the closing post on this journey into Ragnarok. While we've covered most of the basics, and the question was probably about the mythological Ragnarok and not our game specifically, we couldn't resist applying it to the shenanigans of our PCs, seeing as how they're still fresh from Ragnarok actually happening all over their faces. We got together with as many of the players from that game as possible to discuss how we would cast their characters, and ended up with the resulting (slightly less star-studded than the main Ragnarok cast, but they are just the up-and-comers, not the established gods) list.

Cate Blanchett as Aurora Dahl/Vala

While Blanchett is, to be honest, a little too attractive to be Vala, we still think she'd do an excellent job of the role, which needs someone able to be vulnerable and sympathetic but also secretive and manipulative.

Alex Pettyfer as Geoff Matheson/Sowiljr

Pettyfer has a lot in common with Sowiljr, being an upcoming but not yet established dude who tries out a lot of different things and is fairly multitalented but is mainly remembered for being scorchingly hot.

Bailee Madison as Kettila Blomgren/Yoloxochitl

Child actresses are hard to come by, but Madison's well-established and a perfect fit to portray our favorite goddess who is seven and will never be eight.

LL Cool J as Marcus James/Zwazo Fou Fou

Marcus' main attributes are being a monstrously badass person who can and will fuck you up and being completely and totally insane, and we think LL Cool J could embody that kind of psychotically frightening coolness perfectly.

Ryan Reynolds as Mitchell Gozer/Terminus

Goze is twitchy, nervous, smart-mouthed and constantly in motion, all of which Reynolds has amply proven he can handle in other roles (plus, we think he could totally knock Goze's occasional flashes of conscience right out of the park).

Michelle Rodriguez as Sangria Tecuhtli/Eztli

While there are plenty of Latina actresses who might be able to handle playing a dead-eyed, terrifying wrecking ball of a character, Rodriguez (and her fantastic biceps) has already made a career out of doing so.

Ginnifer Goodwin as Sophia Archimedes/Aiona

While again Goodwin is too attractive to play Sophia, who is so physically ignorable as to almost disappear half the time, we have no difficulty believing she could excellently portray someone who is tired of all of you and might set you on fire.

Gina Torres as Vivian Landry/Jioni

Vivian may be darker and skinner, but on the whole Torres' trademark flair, sass and sensual take-no-shit attitude are perfectly her.

Joe Manganiello as Will Nordstrom/Sverrir

Muscles, grumpiness and flashes of terrible judgment combined with awesome power over the elements look like they'll be right up Manganiello's alley.

Jeff Bridges as Woody Anderson/Folkwardr

Bridges is a world champion at brooding, surprisingly deep roles and playing a crochety old badass, all of which suits Woody and his long history of crankiness to a tee.

  1. Frump Cate and Ginnifer down a bit. and How much skinnier do you want Gina to be?

    1. Vivian is really, really skinny. Like, unhealthy possibly anorexic skinny (though Vivian herself, despite being rail-thin, is of course the picture of Epic Stamina health). It's that bony dad of hers.

Torres would have to do a bit of the whole Christian-Bale-in-the-Machinist thing.

    2. And yes, definitely frumping for the other two ladies. Aurora's very attractive by human standards but totally eclipsed by people who have actually decent Epic Appearance (so, pretty much everyone else), and you'd have to look several times before you noticed Sophia next to you.

    3. For poor Gina you might have to do a little bit of CG work. Having any actor do that for a role is borderline insane (yes that includes christian bale, when I heard about that I was horrified).

    4. But man when Christian Bale did that for the part, I was amazed and think it was great acting. Then also look at the movie The Road and what the father did and how the actor was. People who do it may be close to insanity, but also make great actors.

Though Gina would probably never get that skinny, so CG it is.
