Birthrights! Get Your Birthrights!

It's a day or two late for our Thanksgiving deadline target, but better a day or two late than never! The Reliquary is now available for download as a PDF.

It contains plenty of sample Birthrights in all categories, examples of how to upgrade Birthrights over the life of a Scion, and, of course, a few of the Great Big Relics of the mythological gods, just as requested. Hopefully it'll have something for everybody, since everybody certainly pulled together to give us suggestions and requests!

Our next project will be brushing up the Bogovi, our Slavic pantheon, and adding them to the site so that they're easy to access and readily available for anyone who would like to play with them. In the meantime, the poll for next project has been reset; go forth and vote, because we're still riding high on the adrenaline of finishing a long haul and we literally think we can do everything right about now.

And now, off to shovel the house into decent working order, because we've got a game to run!

    1. Samudra is right - Mushika's Claw is a relic made from that most long-suffering of vahanas.

    2. Mushika's Claw is actually a pretty cool interpation of the legend. The foot pain referance is also pretty funny. I'm assuming that refers to Ganesh's opinion of course.

    3. Or to the fact that I imagine he's pretty heavy for one mouse to haul around. ;) Glad you like it!

    4. Yeah, had to skip actual Vahanas because I think they'd need to almost be a side project that talks about what sort of powers they have. So i tried to work him into the supplement in a different way.

  2. I'm more of a classical person myself, and a literal electric guitar wasn't exactly what I had in mind when I requested more musical relics, but HOLY SHIT IS THAT THUNDERBOLT GUITAR AWESOME!!! Only had a chance to skim through it yet, but looks like you guys have another winner on your hands. Congratulations.

    2. Ha ha, awesome, glad you enjoyed it! I'm more of a harps and horns gal myself, but it was too fun an idea to pass up.

  3. can you please explain what the 'Stars' are for Relics? I always thought a 'Star' Relic was just an extremely powerful unique Relic...but now I'm seeing two and three star Relics.

If you don't want to explain, can you at least point me to a place within the books where they are explained?

    1. You're not wrong - the official Scion books use a single star to refer to a relic that's so powerful it can't be counted on their dot rating scale. Of course, their scale only goes to 5, so star relics are basically plot devices that are too powerful for normal relics.

We have an actual star rating system for very powerful relics, but I think I'd better leave John to explain the exact math. He should be back from rehearsal soon!

    2. Ok. So relic powers are worth "points" that represent general power of the relic. Similar to how it works in the books, for 1-5 dot relics each "dot" of relic is worth 1 "point" of power.

However the 6-10th dots of a relic are instead each worth 2 "points" worth of power.

So at 10 dots, a relic is worth 15 "points" of power. After that comes stars.
Each star adds 5 "points" of power onto the relic. Also some incredibly potent relic abilities I have as only purchasable with a star. An example would be the smoking mirror eclipse/infect power.

Also at star level some things may be worth more points. If you added 5 dmg to a 1 star relic, it probably wouldnt become a 2 star. Because its just not a big enough expansion. You might have to add 5 dmg and a power, or maybe 10 damage. Im a lot more fluid with their rating, and general steps between stars represent GREAT leaps in power level.

  4. I have not had time to fully read it all, but what I've read so far was awesome. I especially liked the sample progressions of relics from Hero to god, even though I know that most characters would probably be embarrassed if their divine mother showed up, and gave them a jewelry for their private parts...
It was great seeing the variety of powers and shapes of Relics, and while I didn't look at it much, am sure the Creatures/Guides/Followers were cool too, if only as a source of inspiration.

Thanks for a great work! And for the acknowledgement...

  5. Thanks you two for your tireless work in the expansion of Scion. Just wish that Onyx Path Publishing would bring you two on board for whatever Scion book they publish in the future considering that you've pretty much refined the system at this point.

    Thanks again.

    1. Thank you very much for the high praise.

      We wish that as well.

  6. While unbelievably awesome, some of the powers available are a little confusing, in terms of how many dots a power costs, like adding a Purview count to a roll or a static value like soak or DV.

And, while I'm glad for your writeup of Itlachiayaque, and for the acknowledgement, and it provides an amazing example of a truly godlike Relic... well, it doesn't quite resonate mythically. Mostly because the mirror was meant to be both a portal between worlds and the means to Tezcatlipoca's seeming omniscience, allowing him to peer everywhere...

But this is just nitpicking. The heart of the matter is, this is awesome and you guys are awesome for publishing it.

    1. The worth of dots change a bit through demigod and god(because some things become better and others become worse) so they have to be a little variable through there.

About Itlachiayaque, we have limited sources at home, and I definitely didnt travel to the big library to research it. But none of my books at home, nor internet research yields first or second hand sources that say the mirror does that stuff. Could you lead me to some citations? Next time Im at UNC I'll check em out(they have pretty much every book on aztec myth).

    2. I too am limited in sources available (and having all the Aztec myth sources in one place? Such jealousy!) but just going by my copy of "An Illustrated Dictionary of the Gods and Symbols of Ancient Mexico and the Maya", in their section on mirrors:

"In ancient Mesoamerica, mirrors often represented objects and concepts occuring in nature and society. By representing a world that could be looked into but not passed through, mirrors could be considered as caves or passageways for the supernatural."

I'll have to double check what I have available to me the next time I take a trip to Adelphi's library

Could one use your Thunderbolt Guitar Relic as a weapon (à la FLCL) and, if so, what stats would it have?
