Divinity in the Abstract

Question: If one is looking to become the god of something more abstract - like Victory, or Personal Achievement, or Magnanimity, or Liberty - what (ruleswise) kind of set of powers would make sense? It's a lot less obvious than picking powers for a Sky-Father or even a god of computers. Or do these kinds of gods simply not make sense within the Scion framework?

Not at all! One of the great things about Scion is that you can become a god of anything, no matter how abstract or ridiculous or metaphorical, completely depending on what you want to do with your character. You can be a god of fire, or you can be a god of inspiration, or you can be a god of ennui, and all of those are equally workable.

You're right, it's very easy to just buy Sky if you know you want to be a Sky god, but more abstract or complicated concepts are still stattable with a little creativity. The major thing is to figure out what you think a god of that thing should be able to do, and then to purchase your powers accordingly. Each of the concepts you mentioned as examples could really be approached a number of ways; for example, do you want your god of Victory to be in charge of making armies win battles? Then he should probably invest in War, but if he's more concerned with Victory as the idea of succeeding at personal goals, then he may want Charisma to make people feel the glow of success or Prophecy to guide people toward the right tasks. A goddess of Liberty might take Justice to make sure that no one is oppressed by lawlessness and criminals, making them free to go about their lives in safety, but she also might take Chaos to free people from the constraints of their inhibitions or the strictures of society. A god of Magnanimity might take Animal or Fertility to provide food or clothing for people, Artistry to create things to make their lives easier, Appearance to make himself a gift to everyone who sees him, or anything else that his player decides is an expression of his patronage of the idea of generosity.

If you know what concept you want to be god of but aren't quite sure what you would do as the patron of that idea, we always suggest getting together with the Storyteller or even your fellow players to see if they have any suggestions. It might be helpful to read up (even if only on Wikipedia - people sneer, but it's a great source for connections and philosophical basics) on whatever idea you've chosen to see what kinds of other concepts are connected to it or the ways it might have been viewed by various different societies.

And hey, if you have an idea for what you want to be as a god but it's still a ways off, you know what? Don't sweat it. There's a lot of time and XP between Legend 3 and Legend 9, and even after you've crossed into god territory, you can still change your role if you really want to. Most of our PCs have become gods of concepts that they grew into after spending time figuring out what powers they liked and what things they enjoyed doing as Scions, which led pretty organically to creating divine roles that encompassed those things. They managed to turn up as the gods of last chances, of eternity, of blood in a symbolic sense and of marital fidelity, and they're doing fantastically at those jobs even though they don't have purviews specifically dedicated to those ideas.

  1. Incoming unrelated comment!!!

First you had Colin the son of Dionysus & now you have Simon the son of Hephaestus. Is it wrong that I laughed a little when I noticed that the subversive of Greek culture & the unfavorite of Olympus each had a child on the autism spectrum?

    2. Greeks are all about symmetry and opposites! Plus, Hephaestus and Dionysus are good at getting drunk together.

    3. I'm the guy who plays Skylar (Jake and Nic as well). When I made Skylar, I didn't set out to create a subversive Theoi character. I am very much a neophyte when it comes to Scion and Mythology.

I made him because I have a natural tendency to try to take leadership and Jake in particular was a frustrating role to play. Because well, he's angry most of the time.

I wanted to try and see the game from a different perspective, and take leadership off the table. Which I'm able to do with Skylar. He relates better to things and tasks then he does to people. From the perspective angle, he lets me play around thinking about how an analytic mind is able to process being thrown into a world where Myth is real.

  2. Autism can be seen as another path to divine madness and enlightenment. Read James Rollins book the last Oracle and see what he says about autism and the Oracle of Delphi.

  3. Huh, random question that I asked because the game he's supposed to be in was scrapped due to conflicting schedule and lack of players.

What kind of a character and personality you think someone need to be an Aesir God of the Lost (in all sense of the word)? What Purview would be his domain? I was thinking it would be Illusion, Darkness and Psychopomp.

    1. I'm probably the completely wrong person to answer that as I haven't made it to demigod yet... But I'd guess the way that I'd try to approach it is are you trying to help guide "The Lost" or create "The Lost"

For the former I might suggest, and this is again from my neophyte's perspective... Psychopomp would be a must for physically guiding and never becoming lost yourself. But maybe go in the direction of Magic to twisting Fate to help someone be found, and Mystery or Prophesy to aid in seeing the threads of fate and providing guidance. But if you're imaging being lost in the dark... Maybe Sun and Guardian to be a shining beacon of protection to those lost in dark places.

For the latter, I'd definitely go with Illusion, Darkness, maybe and add to that Chaos which has some powers (like Paralyzing Confusion or Labyrinthine Lingering) that would lend themselves to the whole lost theme.

Anyway, feel free to take or leave my suggestions and make a character that works for you.

    2. Well, was thinking both. I guess that would make him a bit too broad in specialization huh. Besides, not just "lost" but also lost lost. Making people unable to reach their destination or help people reach their previously unclear destination.
