Show Us Your Ink

Question: What's your view on Birthright tattoos? Do you have any special rules for those, or do you stat them the same as normal relics?

In general, they're the same as normal relics; they cost an extra Birthright dot to reflect that they can't be lost (barring unpleasant skinning extravaganzas, I guess), but past that they do what any other relic might do.

We do suggest that PCs try to make their tattoos culture-appropriate - the Japanese have a long tradition of permanent body art, but the Aztecs used paint and other washables instead, for example - but since these are mostly modern people from modern cultures, anything's fair game if it's cool and they have a fun idea for it.

We've had several neat tattoos in our games, from John Shimoda's sword that can be pulled from his arm to become a real weapon to Sangria's sunburst that absorbs damage that her children would have taken to Vivian's big black PROPERTY OF TEZCATLIPOCA brand that gave her way too many Darkness bonuses (she made some poor choices). I'd love to hear about some cool tattoo relics from you guys in the comments.

  1. John's tattoo was a staff. Wanted to get that in there before brent saw :)

    2. I also forgot to mention Kettila's full-body vine tattoo situation.

    3. ...waaaaait a sec. Y'all play with Brent? Does that mean y'all are more North Carolina Scion Players?

    4. That we are (though Brent is no longer a regular as he moved a little too far away for the regular commute). They grow a lot of Scion players down here.

    5. Some of the original NC scion players. We only get to play with brent a couple times a year now. I think the city I live in is in our FAQ isnt it anne? Maybe I'm wrong and was afraid of stalkers.

    7. Man, someone needs to organize a North Carolina Scion Players Weekend or something. Maybe we could invade Heroes Con or one of the mini-cons here in Charlotte? Something...

That'd be Epic. Possibly literally Epic, since if there was enough sleep deprivation and booze involved, someone might start reciting an Epic Poem.

    8. We do have a guy who recites war chants in Gaelic when using Blessing of Bravery. And he doesn't even need to be drunk.

      Are you hereabouts, too, then?

    9. We perform this year at ConCarolinas if people wanted to do a meetup there.

  2. When Cuchulain showed up in my game, he had full sleeves of tattoos, which was where he kept important things. He pulled a coin off his shoulder and gave it to one of our Tuatha De Scions; the coin was a way to contact Zhang Guo Lao to cash in a favor.

Xochipilli turned up to speak with his niece, a Scion of Xochiquetzal, and when she asked him for a Fertility Relic, he took her to a tattoo parlor run by a friend Hawaiian Oni. Now she has an abstract, Aztec-inspired chain of vines and flowers down her spine. The more Legend she burns on Fertility Boons in a scene, the bigger and more complex the design gets.

    They're pretty nifty overall!

    1. Ooh, I really like the growing tattoo design - that's super fancy! I love extra cosmetic touches like that in any kind of relic.

  3. I play a Scion of The Morrigan in one of the many Scion games my friends and I are involved in, and it lets him access the Chaos and Death purviews.

When Ciaran channels the Chaos purview, the tattoo disperses into a cloud of black, chaotic shapes with the occasional image of a raven's head to show the nature of his chaos.

When he channels the Death purview, the tattoo shifts from a raven to a skeletal raven - how 'dead' it looks depends on what boon he's using, or what he's attempting to do.

    1. That is awesome. I love the scaling deathliness of the raven depending on the specific boon used.
