Baby Mama Drama

Question: My character had the... let's say "misfortune" to hook up with Aphrodite in our game and unfortunately rolled a 9 on the reproduction chart. If Ares finds out hes going to kill my character. What would you do in this situation? My character doesn’t yet know shes pregnant. How can I attempt to keep my character alive? And yes, my ST says there would be a death if there is a direct conflict with Ares.

We agree with your Storyteller. He is totally going to kill you if you are in the room when he finds out about this. We don't know what Legend your character is, but there's really no level of Legend where anyone is "safe" from Ares, anyway. We'll try to help anyway, though!

First of all, you can try to hide all this, but it probably won't work. Unfortunately, hiding a pregnancy like this is going to be next to impossible. Anyone with Assess Health (Apollo, Artemis and Hera at least, probably several others) will see that she's pregnant immediately - probably before either you or she knows, in fact. Even if she uses her Epic Appearance to avoid being visibly pregnant, folks with Ultimate Perception (again, Apollo and Artemis at least) will still know. She could go far, far away and not come back until the baby's born, but then everyone's going to want to know where she went and why, which means you need an amazing cover story and someone who can lie about it so fantastically that said people with Perception above won't immediately see right through it (not to mention somewhere for her to live for these nine months!). And even if you pull all that off, all it takes is one guy with Mystery to blow the lid off the whole thing, and you've got a ticking time bomb of a child running around who will almost certainly be a problem late ron. And remember that other gods from non-Greek pantheons may also run into her, and many of them may also find out about it and tell other people.

We'd also like to point out that other people besides Ares are probably going to be pissed off about this. You might get lucky, but there's a very good chance that a large number of Greek gods are now angry with you. Hephaestus, in particular, is a dangerous one; I don't know if your ST plays him as still married to Aphrodite or not, but even if he isn't, he was not pleased by all her cheating on him ever before and he probably won't appreciate that she's now sleeping with lowly Scions, even. His revenge is apt to be a lot more creative and difficult to see coming than Ares', and you'd better plan how to deal with the possibility of it before you end up in a throne-prison or wearing a cursed necklace or any of the other things he does to people he's mad at. Also, remember that Aphrodite is the belle of the ball on Olympus, and that all the other gods absolutely want to bang her and used to actively fight over her before she got married, so you're looking at a lot of gods - Apollo, Poseidon and Hermes are all named as her suitors - who will probably trigger jealous rages at the idea that not only did she turn them down, then she went and slept with you, who are basically a nobody. They may want to punish you, especially with Vengeance egging them on. And, of course, Hera is the goddess of faithful marriage, so she's not going to like this, and Ares is her son and may ask for her help, so Justice boons just came to the party. You may want to stay far, far away from the entire pantheon if you can.

Before you do anything, though you need to find out what Aphrodite's doing. It sounds like you have no idea what her take on the situation is or how she plans to handle it, which may be very literally fatal for you. Mystery can help, or you could simply try going to ask her (and hoping that she doesn't lie). She's not an idiot, so she will probably be figuring out her own plan for how to deal with this; she might abort the baby (basic Health powers make that pretty easy), use her Epic Appearance to hide evidence of the pregnancy so that Ares at least can't physically see it, claim it's Ares' kid, claim it's someone else's kid, claim it's immaculate conception, or even throw you under the bus by claiming that you assaulted her. She's definitely not going to just sit passively around and not try to make this come out the way she wants it to, so you need to find out what she's doing. If you come up with a brilliant plan to hide the whole thing, and then she just goes to Ares and tells him about it, you're 100% boned in spite of all your hard work. On the other hand, if she likes you enough, she might help you out. You'll never know until you try.

Once you know what she's doing (and assuming the answer isn't "I told him you attacked me, go draw up a will"), our next best suggestion is for you to go out and find a powerful protector. You know you can't survive Ares on a rampage, so start kissing butts - find somebody who can maybe protect or hide you, or convince Ares (or Ares' pantheon, so they can stop him) that killing you isn't worth it or isn't an option right now. The other Greeks may not be great choices, since they are all terrible vengeful people, but if you can find someone powerful enough in another pantheon and throw yourself on their mercy, they may be willing to help you in exchange for your services.

...what services those will be depend on the god, but be ready to have to do unpleasant tasks, talk to people you don't want to talk to, fight stuff, be experimented on, or whatever else they want in return for saving you. No one's going to do it for free, and they probably don't want anything you want to give. But hey, it beats being dead, right?

Other than that, we can only suggest that you be good at hiding. We would assume that Ares, or other offended parties, are going to find out about this sooner or later, so do your best to have a panic room/escape route/contingency plan. Ares isn't great at finding people, so you may be able to elude him for a while. Try to go somewhere he can't or won't chase you, or maybe create distractions or disturbances that cause him to veer off instead of pursuing you single-mindedly. Your life is all about survival right now, at least until this blows over, and your band will probably be along for the ride, since it's all too likely they'll get caught in the crossfire at some point.

Good luck, man. At least you'll have a very beautiful memory to keep you warm on those cold nights of hiding in the wilderness, hoping no one can find you.

    1. I can't help but think that all this advice is kind of useless unless the character finds out that he's about to become a daddy. You should probably make sure that happens first.

Out of curiosity, who's your divine parent? They might be able to help you out.

    2. Luckily enough she did tell him kinda by dangling it in his face with that huge underlying impression of don't piss me off and you will be ok kind of message and my character has alicited the aide of Athena and his brother triton as of now

    3. And that would be of course Poseidon one of the people pissed off lol

    4. Of course, if there's anyone in the Theoi who'd be happy to work against Aphrodite it would be Athena.

Poseidon...wait, you're the guy whose character was the Frost and War wielding Wrath of Poseidon right? He might be more help than you give him credit for. Remember the lengths he went to for Polyphemus? Plus, Poseidon has a bone to pick with Ares...Ares killed his son Halirrhotius for attempting to rape his daughter Alkippe. You, as his son, going and sleeping with Ares' mistress (and mind you, he doesn't actually have any legal claim on her) will probably only make him immensely happy at the indirect payback.

  2. I am the frost/war wielding Wrath of Poseidon thats awesome that someone remembered that. I never thought of it that way in my game Poseidons not the most loving of fathers he uses Triton as his intermediary. But this could aide me in my favor

  3. I'm not so sure that Ares would really be that pissed, come to think of it.

Aphrodite isn't Ares' wife. They've been illicit lovers for a long time. And the other Theoi know good well that monogamy is not in Aphrodite's nature, so why should they be pissed that Aphrodite took another lover? I mean, they ALL know that they hardly have exclusive rights to her.

I could see Hephaestus being mad, if Aphrodite is still his wife. He's a husband who has been cuckolded YET AGAIN. Yeah, I could see him being pissed, and he'd have a legitimate reason to be pissed. Hera as well, since Aphrodite's very nature goes against her own.

But Ares KNOWS Aphrodite doesn't only sleep with him. So do the other gods, so why would this be such a big deal to them? She sleeps with MORTALS on a routine basis, and Ares doesn't slaughter all of them. Heck, right now, she's sleeping around with mortals for the express PURPOSE of getting pregnant so she can provide her Pantheon with more Scions.

So, she slept with a Scion and is now pregnant? Well, first of all, how high is the Scion's Legend rating? If he was a mere Hero, or Demigod, then the child will be either a Lesser Immortal, or another Scion waiting to be activated. It's pretty much what Aphrodite is supposed to be doing right now.

Short of Hera and Hephaestus, I really don't see how the other gods would really take this personally. They all know Aphrodite isn't theirs and theirs alone, the child may grow up to become a useful soldier in the war effort, and sleeping with a Scion isn't any different from sleeping with a mortal. Heck, the Scion may die in battle long before he ever reaches Godhood, so what's the big deal?

    1. Oh, and as far as a protector goes?

Don't I remember reading something that, although she herself doesn't do sex, Artemis was considered something of a protector of young lovers? Something about her providing them with shadowy places to come together in secret, or something?

    2. Ares is historically very jealous of Aphrodite. And, alas, jealousy doesn't necessarily have anything to do with who has a "claim" on her; all you have to have to be jealous is to see someone else getting to have sex with someone you want. Ares already murdered Adonis over Aphrodite, and I don't imagine he'd be less cranky about some random Scion.

The whole point of jealousy is that it's irrational. It doesn't matter if Ares has any "official claim" on Aphrodite; that won't magically make him not jealous that someone else had sex with her. And in a pantheon full of people who run on high-octane emotions and Vengeance, there's likely to be all kinds of fallout.

    3. Ares can't do anything about the other Gods who sleep with Aphrodite because their Gods in their own right, so I'll leave them be.

And while she has a reputation, and she definitely has a long list of divine lovers, Aphrodite's slept with only three mortals as far as I know: Butes, the beekeeper, who got away scot free. Anchises, father of Aeneas, who was crippled by Zeus for daring to speak about the affair, and poor Adonai, whose story doesn't need retelling. So, yeah, two out of three of her mortal lovers got screwed. I'd say those are odds to be worried about.

    4. And, perhaps most importantly, these are the Theoi we're talking about. Do you honestly think they're gonna let a little matter like the Titan War get in the way of their ancient prejudices and rivalries? Hera still makes life hell for every Scion of Zeus, Artemis still won't consider treating male Scions on par with female ones, the whole Pantheon treats Hephaesthus like a freak show despite the fact that they need his Artistry more than ever now...you get the picture.

    5. Hmmm, after a quick check of my sources, it seems like Ares was more angry about Adonis because he felt Aphrodite was spending more time with Adonis than she was with him. It could be interpreted that Ares doesn't mind Aphrodite having the occasional "fling," but it's when she starts to develop real feelings for one of her lovers, that he tends to get jealous.

Butes seems to be just like that. Aphrodite had a brief little fling with him. Nothing really deep developed between them. Thus? Ares had no real reason to feel threatened by him.

Anchises? Yeah, you run around bragging about how you nailed Aphrodite and you're SURPRISED when her notoriously violent father decides he's had enough of you talking about his daughter? That right there's called "hubris," boys and girls. It's a bad thing. Bad things happen when you do that. So, Anchises wasn't punished because he slept with Aphrodite, he was punished because he bragged about it.

So, it seems to me that this Scion should only have been in trouble if Aphrodite started to develop real feelings for him. If this was just a one-night stand, it really shouldn't be that big of a deal. The only other way he should be in danger is if he ALSO went around crowing about nailing her.

Also? As far as the Vengeance thing? This is another case of questioning how Vengeance works. In the case of Adonis? Yeah, Ares' Vengeance drove him to kill Aphrodite's lover.....But then what about APHRODITE'S Vengeance? Ares just killed a guy of whom she was quite fond and who had given her much pleasure. You'd think SHE would now be seeking Vengeance against Ares. Even if she wasn't really in love with Adonis, Ares still took away her favorite toy. Wouldn't she want to take revenge against him?

    6. Hmm...I kind of agree with you. I disagree insofar as I honestly think that if Ares ever found out about a mortal screwing Aphrodite, he would murder him. But in the case of Butes, he probably never found out. In the case of Anchises, Zeus had already passed judgement, and Ares did not dare to try anything beyond that. Which is why the crux of this whole question is 'ifAres finds out'.

As for the Vengeance issue, well, the Theoi seem to have some very specific triggers or their Vengeance. Hera, after all, doesn't hate every Scion out there, only those of Zeus, despite the fact that as Goddess of marital fidelity she totally should (and she probably has small v vengeance towards them). Similarly, I'd wager that Aphrodite's Vengeance isn't keyed to 'people who kill my boy toys' but to 'people who sleep with my boy toys'. Ares is fine, it's Persephone she has Vengeance for.

  4. There's another thing to consider; does the Goddess of Love really shag a random Scion, and get pregnant, all by chance? I'd be more worried that she has a plan, you're part of it, and your ultimate survival depends entirely on her end-game - whatever that may be...
