Question: 1. Love that the purviews are getting re-examined. 2. Do you think that the categories that you gave the purviews (Fate, Elemental, Humanity, Physical, Celestial) could themselves becomes game mechanics in some way, or would be good mechanics if they are able to be implemented? 3. Like how the progress bar for the projects now has a numeric indicator as well. You do great work guys, keep it up!
Thank you, anonymous encourager!
You know, we did not particularly have a master mechanics plan involving using those categories for purviews; we mostly put them in similar categories to give ourselves some organization as we worked on them. Some categories - elemental purviews, for example - will probably have similar idea and kinds of powers, so we wanted to work on those ones at the same time, while others - let's say the Humanity purviews - may use similar mechanics because they tackle similar subjects even if their boons are wildly different. We weren't trying to put hint at any secret overarching purview grouping plan in this case (if we were, we probably would have grouped things more evenly!), just trying to put things in order.
That doesn't rule out the possibility that we might go crazy and do something like that in the future anyway, but for now we don't have plans to do so.
Calling it now: Fate, Elemental, Humanity, Physical and Celestial Mega-Avatars coming!
ReplyDeleteReminds me a little of how you guys handled purviews for the God Draft on the old White Wolf Forums.
ReplyDeleteAny chance we'll see it again someday over on the Onyx Path forums?
While lightning is probably going to go into Thunder, and tornadoes are probably going into Sky, what category are you putting Storms under? Or both?
ReplyDeleteBecause Storm gods are almost always depicted with lightning, but Tornadoes are also associated with storms, but tornadoes are wind?
The division is so confusing!
Thunder is the purview of storms, and will include thunder, lightning, rain and general storm effects. Sky will be about air, breath, wind and the vault of heaven itself.
DeleteThe other elementals all have their own forms of natural disaster that could be called "storms", but each will be in the purview that governs it - whirlwinds in Sky, floods in Water, firestorms in Fire, and so on.
I'd actually really love to see a Boon to create sandstorms in Earth! :)
DeleteAnd thankfully, I suppose this means Weather Husbandry is no longer a thing? That Boon was another also pissed me off for some illogical reason. Maybe because it was another one of those 'I can do absolutely anything' Boons. Maybe not mechanically, but conceptually it kind of made the rest of the Purview obsolete.
Oh, yeah, we hated that one, too.
DeleteI think the thing I'm really excited about seeing in this next update of yours is the part you mentioned about 'the vault of heaven itself'. I remember you once stated that the biggest problem with designing new Sun and Moon Boons is that Sun and Moon Gods rarely do anything with their domains beyond BE them and keep them moving. It seems that Gods who are the vault of the sky have similar issues. I'm really looking forward to seeing how you guys tackle that, not just for itself but because I imagine it might be a good preview, so to speak, for the eventual Celestial Purview rewrite.
