Question: Can you put up character page for Jay Ortiz?
Oh, Ortiz, you delightful bastard of a character. Jay doesn't have a character page at the moment simply because he isn't a PC - he's an NPC (played by John to vex and ruin lives) and doesn't get the star treatment that players' characters do. However, we've been discussing overhauling the NPC section completely, and I imagine that as soon as we get around to doing so, he'll be one of the first ones to get his stats published for the world to see.
I'm with you, anonymous questioner: Jay Ortiz (now Maquicelotl, God of Freedom) is one of the most entertaining mofos in the NPC toybox. Count on me to lobby for him!
Holy shit, I had no idea he had ascended. That must piss off the Jolie pit kids, especially Carlos. He's stuck in Mictlan while Jay is living it up in Acopa. Has he run into Ketilla and Sangria yet? I think there part of the same universe.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, everybody's part of the same universe!
DeleteI'm not sure if the Jolie-Pitt kids are aware of Jay's exploits lately, since being dead they're not in much of a position to keep tabs on him (especially Carlos, but Darcy and Hime aren't really globe-trotting, either). I'm sure they'd be pretty upset if they found out, though. Vocally upset.
I don't believe Kettila has met Jay yet, but he and Sangria go way back (starting in Korea when Geoff first realized he had met someone he hated more than pretty much everyone else in his life put together). They don't always get along; Jay is something of a modernist among the Aztecs, preferring animal sacrifices and lobbying for a democratic power structure, while Sangria is about as traditional as anyone can be without actually being born in the fifteenth century. Still, they help each other whenever they're around, and Sangria's been known to disappear to go save Jay when he's in trouble, usually leaving behind a severely disgruntled Norseman.
Woody, the only survivor of the infamous Mexico City PC Massacre, has not seen Jay again since. I can only assume that bad things will happen if he does.
So is Jay, a Hero, a Villian, an anti-hero or something else. On the one hand he seems to be highly liberal with the animal sacrifices and democracy, but on the other he slaughtered the Jolie-Pitt kids, and seems to be a complete asshole.
ReplyDeleteEh...he defended his home against the jolie pitt kids assaulting it. He killed one by accident, then the rest charged his home for revenge and he took them all down. He probably didnt need to murder them, but they were definitely attempting to murder him.
DeleteHero, villian etc all depend on which side of the fight your on. Im not sure he fits in any of them actually though, no matter what side you're looking at it from.
I think hes helped pcs more then he has hurt them, and he has definitely helped humanity through fimbulwinter more then most. So you'd have to make your own call based on that.
In all technicality, Jay didn't mean to kill Darcy; he wanted to shut her up and misjudged how much punishment she could take. Not that this makes him less of an ass for punching a little girl and dumping her body in the gutter, but it wasn't intentional. He's had other moments of glorious bastardry, including a very entertaining altercation with Sora in Japan when the Japanese scion took offense at his fast-and-loose style with the local rules and his obvious intention to sleep with Saki.
DeleteBut in general, Jay is helpful to a lot of people; you just have to play by his rules. He certainly helped Geoff and Sangria get into Japan and has lately been spending a lot of time training baby Aztec Scions in an attempt to make sure they all gain power quickly enough to survive the war. He can certainly be a monumental dick if he wants to, though, so pissing him off usually leads to heartbreak all around.
Pissing him off can lead you to being beaten to death in a murderous rage, as Darcy well knows. I thought the Jolie Pitt kids were the heroes and Jay the villian of that particular story, but maybe Darcy and Hime-kame were two privliged brats who got in over there heads with no idea what and who they were fucking with? and what about Angelina and Brad? are they dead in ragnarok? with all the destruction going on at least both there careers are down the tubes.
ReplyDeleteLike a lot of things in Scion, it wasn't entirely black and white, and the heroes from one point of view are the villains from another (see the different viewpoints of Geoff and Alison on releasing Colin from Toshiro Industries). The Jolie-Pitt kids and their band were actually trying to bodyguard Jay from local gangsters who were pissed off at the anti-drug cartel messages in his raps, but they were dismayed to discover that he was a violent drug-user himself. Yet he was also doing good and working for the gods. It wasn't clear-cut either way.
DeleteThere's no excuse, of course, for Jay killing Darcy; she was annoying him, but that's not a reason to beat someone to death, particularly someone who's trying to help you. It was an accident, but it was a very bad, very significant accident, and it started a chain reaction that led to the deaths of everybody else involved except for Woody. While we haven't seen many consequences for his actions, that doesn't mean they didn't happen; they were just mostly offstage as he isn't a PC. I'd have to assume that, at the very least, he probably had to have an excruciatingly uncomfortable meeting with Xipe Totec at some point.
The Jolie-Pitt kids certainly didn't really know what they were getting into, but they were just kids, doing what their divine parents told them to. They're not bad guys or really good guys, and neither is Jay; they're just a bunch of Scions who made some poor decisions and ended up collectively mostly dead.
As for the Jolie-Pitt parents, I actually don't know. Nobody's bothered to check on them, and you're right, their careers are definitively over, so they're as much lost in the faceless crowds of humanity as anyone. They might be freezing to death in Ragnarok or somehow embroiled in the Greek struggles going on up and down the continental US right now.
It would make an interesting story to have the Jolie-Pitt kids come roaring back to life to find there parents and get revenge on Jay. Death could have a maturing affect on all of them. Darcy could learn discretion on keeping her mouth shut, Hime-kami could be a little more humble, and Carlos could be more hard line and hell bent on bringing Jay down. of course it would take a lot of work to get them out of the underworld and then up to god level, but if there was ever a time for life and death to turn back in on each other and for legendary deeds it would be ragnarok and it's after math. You could bring back any number of characters, especially John Doe back to life. As fate shifts to let Baldur be reborn, who knows what self serving god of magic (Tezcatlipoca, Loki, Kalfu) would use that twist of fate to change the very rules of life and death ripping open a door any number of beings could use to come back from the dead. even if they end up being NPC's, you could go balls to the wall and bring all your dead characters back from the dead to create even more action and chaos, as the gods struggled to figure out who will live, who will die, and how to fix what has been broken.
ReplyDeleteJay is pretty popular amongst the aztec gods(one might say most popular amongst the non ancient gods), so itd be difficult for any of them(especially his father) to help out with any sort of taking down Jay plan. More then likely the jolie-pitt kids would have most of the aztec pantheon(including sangria) to go against.
ReplyDeleteMore importantly however, those are all pcs, and those players are playing new characters in games now. So it would all have to happen offstage and wouldnt be as fulfilling.
But generally cool ideas overall. Just would need more time in life, and for everyone not to love Jay.
Pfft, how can you not love Jay? Even Sangria loves Jay. It's his thing.
DeleteDivine charisma can be a pain in the ass when you make a god like Jay your enemy.
ReplyDeleteSo true. I keep hoping for an Epic Charisma rap battle between him and Sowiljr, but so far they usually just glare at each other and leave.
DeleteYeah, the morale is that those people generally arent enemies. Because eventually you learn to love them(or they make you love them).
DeleteWell... or you strike up an eternal vendetta with them (cough, Aiona and Hachiro). But definitely one of those two.
DeleteStill, no matter how much Charisma you have there is always someone who hates you, and I bet Sowiljr would welcome three allies against Jay. If they ever did come back to life, perhaps Geoff could be there guide and tutor along with Woody. I know he'd be overjoyed to see the three kids back in the game. Sorry if I'm harping on about them, but they are really interesting characters, and I seems such a wast to put them in the "trash bin" When a thousand stories could have been written about them, there bond and rivalries, and how they would fight to stay a family with divine politics trying to tear them apart. even from there low levels I can think of god roles for them. Darcey could be the godess of firey speech, the words that inflame passions that can lead to great feats of creation and destruction in equal measure. Hime-Kami could be a goddess of hard water, the beautiful cresting waves and white water that can easily bash you against the shore and stones and leave you a broken smear, and Carlos can be a god of adolescents, sort of an older version of ketilla, a personal protector and guide to youths who the world rejects and who reject the world to follow there own path.
ReplyDeleteO, dont worry about harping. Im certain that at least the players enjoy it. But even sowiljr is slowly coming around to jay, and sowiljr certainly wouldnt do anything to bring on the wrath of tezcat. Tezcat terrifies everyone.
DeleteHas Jay had his uncomfortable talk with Xipe Totec yet? At least one god is on Carlos side.
DeleteYeah, it went something like:
ReplyDelete"I was minding my own business when your son tried to sneak attack me in my house with 3 other friends. I was outnumbered, and over powered. I just barely escaped with my life. Im so sorry for your loss" /charmer /boyswillbeboys
poor Carlos, even if he does make it back to life, his own father will probably force him to apologize to Jay for attacking him for no apparent reason. I at least hope that woody kicks his ass eventually, Tezcat, or no Tezcat.
ReplyDeleteHaha, yeah if theres anyone that would itd be woody. Im pretty sure at the least a fight will happen. And yeah, carlos will always be...poor carlos.
DeleteHence Carlos would make a great god of outcasts and rejects. A god of chaf as it were.
ReplyDeleteooo, good one
DeleteGiven the characters information and stats, I could probably come up with a decent god role for them, or predicted what role the player will come up with.
ReplyDeleteIts a pretty impressive talent
DeleteComes from my research in the game. I've never run one myself because I've never found a group of people to play, but I know character creation and development inside and out.
