Quote: What is the viability of a character build with legend 2, nine boons, and 1 epic attribute (intelligence)?
Depends on what you're doing with him or her, I guess. If you've got plenty of physically-inclined friends in your band to keep his unprepossessing and mortally fragile self in one piece, he might survive until he can pick up some more useful things, but he's probably going to be kind of boring to play. Since he has no physical or social attributes, he can't really do anything - being the brain is nice and all, but being literally useless most of the time is not very exciting for most players. Keep in mind, too, that he's going to be blowing all his Birthright points on just being able to have that many purviews he can use, so he's not going to get any fun functionality there, either.
What would be the origin of such a character - why would he be so talented in magic and so tragically normal (or even sub-par, depending on where you spend your points) at things mortals are normally able to do? Level 1 boons are often handy, especially if you're planning to pick up all the immunity boons, but they're not exactly giving you much to work with. They shouldn't, because level 1 is barely past mortal, but the build you're suggesting seems like it's struggling to do even that.
Of course, you can do whatever you want with a character - maybe being fragile and kind of useless is something you want to play on at low Hero and then flip on its head when he comes into his own later on in Hero and Demigod. But it may be frustrating for both you and your fellow players in the meantime, so don't go into it without knowing that.
I'd like to know why you'd want to work with such an improbable setup in the first place - what's the point of having all those boons at Legend 2? Are you just trying to give yourself all the immunities and passive buffs? I'd warn you that almost any Storyteller who sees you doing that will make sure to throw in something you don't have an immunity to at some point, and you're going to be completely out of luck without anything else to fall back on. More importantly, do you really want to set yourself up as the guy who does nine purviews? It's not sustainable in the long run - you'll inevitably have to stop buying some to focus on others, and you may end up feeling like those Birthright and XP points could have gone toward something you actually want to specialize in later. Not only that, but unless you buy some Epics at some point, you're not going to be very good at most of those purviews, which means you'll have to stop working on even more of them in order to have the stats to back up those you do want.
On the other hand, maybe you just want to experiment with different low-level boons in purviews to decide what you want your style to be, and there's nothing wrong with that. But don't come into it thinking that you'll be an instant master of those things and hailed as a multi-talented adept; more often than not, you probably won't be doing much of anything (though super-brains will, of course, be very helpful to the band, especially if nobody else has any).
It's for this fan fiction i am righting where I generate a character sheet to match the stories character, and this character I am talking about is a son to Thoth who is smart, but little else, a physically unpreposessing nerd who might have some charisma, but who was given the book of thoth and the book of gates as birthrights. To tell the truth it was to help keep him legend two (like I said he is a rather unprepossesing honor student) while sinking the 15 bonus points into birthrights. A way to make it work might be to keep him as far back from the fighting as possible until he gains some of the more powerful boons but also until he expands into other epic attributes. You can still buy them during game even if they are exspensive (and will have to as he reaches the cap for intelligence). It would be hard to play at first, but it's an interesting example of a formerly weak and nerdy character coming into his own. Besides he has high craft and science scores so what he lacks in butt kicking he makes up for in being able to cobble together nasty surprises. and he does epically strong and persuasive friends to protect him, he is basically the brains of the band. Finally, perhaps i don't have to invest in all the boons in the books of thoth or gates at first, picking more of them up as I go along and readjusting my epic attributes.
ReplyDeleteThat all makes sense and sounds cool. Your main problem is that the base rules dont work well for making a character like that. And I really wouldnt use them. If I were STing this character Id let you trade in those points for more ability points, or virtues, or willpower or something. Having only epic int makes perfect sense, filling up 9 boon slots cause the rules tell you that you have that many points does not.
DeleteThat's a good point - Abilities are a great place to dump a lot of bonus points for this kind of character. That way he can be knowledgeable on a very wide variety of subjects, and since he's a story character and not a PC, you only have to worry about his other problems if they affect the story.
Deletewell it's a fan fiction so I have control over all the characters and there development. In fact I have you E-mail address so I'll send you the write ups and you can give me your opinion on this comment section.
ReplyDeleteI dont think theres anything necessarily wrong with it, but it just doesnt seem to make a lot of sense, and going forward, he certainly wont be able to keep up with all those purviews. His abilities also seem lacking for a nerd. Like, hes not even very good at being a nerd.
DeleteIf its just fiction though, Im not sure you need the exact statting of characters. If it helps you its certainly fine, but Im not sure if being so precise is necessary.
Well, I also don't know what kind believable birthrights from egypt i could give him so I kind of had to go with the books. could you give me some suggestions. If I do rearrange his sheet, I would give him primarily the intelligence knacks and maybe charisma.
ReplyDeleteIn general, any symbolism from Egypt will do - eyes of Ra or Horus, lions, pyramids, falcon feathers, scales, papyrus scrolls, devotional statues... slap a purview or a one-dot power on it and call it a day. Especially in fiction, you really don't have to worry too much about the relics; they're pretty much incidental, since the story's action will be moving along with the characters themselves. It's cool to be able to describe the fancy book someone's reading, but it's not going to be essential to the story very often.
DeleteI don't know how John and Anne run extra knacks at character creation, but if you want to go with the RAW, you could put a bunch of points into extra Epic Intelligence Knacks, or if he has Magic as a Purview (I can't for the life of me remember what the Books give you for Purviews), you could always just load up on spells.
ReplyDeleteOh, yeah, you could totally just buy extra Knacks - in fact, for a character who's supposed to be heavily Epic Intelligence front-loaded, it's a great idea. Picking up things like Telepathy, Language Mastery, Wireless Interface and so on can only help that character concept, probably more than a bunch of level one boons chosen only to take up space.
DeleteOk, here is a reworked version of the character I've been having trouble with. His new half moon specs give access to the moon purview and +2 success to perception rolls. The Ibis-phone is identical to the igallahorn birthright in scion companion.
