Question: Why does no one like the Trimurti?
A thorny question. Depends on who the "no one" is in this scenario. If it's people in general, there's no question at all - people freaking love the Trimurti! Vishnu and Shiva especially almost have their own religions at this point, that's how much people love them (Brahma really doesn't, but it's his own fault for that whole sassing the other two thing he decided to do).
But I suspect you're referring to a blog post a while ago in which I mentioned that no one likes the Trimurti, so that means within the context of our Scion games. There are two levels to that: why other gods don't like the Trimurti, and why the PCs don't like the Trimurti.
Other gods don't like the Trimurti because they tend to behave as if they're the be-all and end-all final authorities in everything, which, unsurprisingly, rubs other gods in positions of authority the wrong way. Oh, sure, dudes like Zeus and Odin have ego problems of their own, but the Trimurti are on another level; these are guys who not only say they created the entire world, but claim to single-handedly keep it from falling apart on a daily basis and will eventually roll it up into a little clay ball and remake it no matter what any other pantheon has to say about it. When it comes to having a better-than-you attitude about their cosmic power, the Trimurti are almost unmatched, and the fact that they have millions of worshipers in the World fervently believing in their ability to do these things just makes other old gods who don't all the more testy. These are a trio of gods who once marched into Valhalla while Odin was having dinner and informed the entirety of Asgard that X person was under their protection and that anyone who dared meddle with that person would answer to them before leaving as if that were a perfectly acceptable and politically valid maneuver. These are dudes who blew up enormous chunks of other pantheons' territories during a spat between them and then went home without so much as sending a "sorry we exploded twenty miles of your coastline" card. These are guys who were like, "well, we don't have any Scions of our own free right now, so we'll just appropriate these Loa over here instead" and not only didn't see anything wrong with this, they were also vocally disappointed by the substandard quality they believed said non-Deva Scions possessed. They are extremely aware of their own power and don't really acknowledge anyone else as being comparable to themselves. In short, they're kind of douchebags.
Not that they don't do good things for the gods and get the Devas involved in the war against the Titans - they do those things, and they do them well. They just do them while pissing everyone else off a lot of the time, so most other pantheons avoid them and India in general unless they have to cooperate for some reason.
There are also several groups in our games that hate the Trimurti for more specific reasons. They're actually having something of an internecine cold war with the older Vedic Devas (Indra, Surya and Agni), who have never appreciated their takeover of the pantheon and who are agitating to return to their old positions of power. Devas traditionally get into spats with one another pretty easily, and especially now, when folks like Surya are actually making a comeback in worship in the modern world, they have no particular reason to stop (sadly, even the Titan war doesn't stop gods from squabbling. Nothing stops gods from squabbling). And, of course, the Yazata continue to bear their torch of intense dislike and hatred for the daevas that they believe work for Ahriman, including Shiva, who they know as the evil archer Sarva.
As for the PCs, they're simpler: they hate the Trimurti because the Trimurti have been total dicks to them. Brahma nearly killed Sverrir twice and blew up a bunch of mortals and landmarks in the process, Shiva physically assaulted Vala and Jioni (to "make them better", he informed them and a rabidly upset Folkwardr), and Vishnu turned up to declare to an entire band that they were going to drop what they were doing right now and go fight a series of horrible monsters instead because he wanted it taken care of but had other things to do that day. Of course, the PCs don't get to see the bigger picture all the time, so it's possible that there were larger forces at work or that they really needed to be doing those things - but since they don't know, they've settled for comfortably despising the chief Hindu gods and quietly plotting their revenge.
When I asked the question I was referring to the blog post a while ago, so thanks. From his point of view, how would Shiva assaulting Vala and Jioni make them better?
ReplyDeleteOh, well, he was giving them temporary boons of great strength and impressive control over the human body. Of course, he was doing it by tearing flesh off their bodies, giving them diseases and shoving things into Vala's eye sockets, so they were not at all interested in his help, but Shiva is not a dude who takes no for an answer.
DeleteI just find this whole hilariously ironic that our broadly Eastern band(Shen, Dava, Kami with our token westerners from Egypt and Greece) have broadly had the reverse issues with Shiva being completely reasonable to his daughter. On the other hand since we don't have any Loa, Tuatha or Aesir they come off as those completely crazy people who have no concept of law(especially the Tuatha)
ReplyDeleteWell, to be fair, the Tuatha are completely crazy people.
DeleteI know, I just find my first reaction to statements like that about Shiva being "nah he's cool, but Morrigan that bitch needs to go"
DeleteOh, our PCs hate her, too. Hatred all around.
DeleteFunnily enough in the three games I've been in, the Morrigan has become this lynchpin that everything revolves around. She's invited to every slaughterfest.
DeleteHowever, the Tuatha are properly depicted as, a little quirky but reasonable while those Deva and Yazata just don't understand letting something go. Geez.
Bah with enemies you know where they stand, but with Tuatha who knows?
DeleteBring booze and wenches. The Tuatha would be your best friends.
ReplyDeleteThe Tuatha have to bee the most fun gods to be around. Even with crazy members like the Morrigan they do seem to be the most "human" in that they don't stamp all over there worshipers like some other gods. How can you not like a god like the Dagda who doesn't care who his drinking buddy is (god or mortal) as long as he has one?
ReplyDeleteYou know who was also apparently a Great drinking buddy, fun to be around in person? George W Bush.
DeleteThat's kind of at least the Broad issue that comes up in Character, since we don't have them being the cool people we hang out with, they just come off as crazy people, and those who aren't psychos(like the Morrigan) are just horribly irresponsible.
I'm saying that though they do cause much crazyness they do it because of the love they have for there people (at least compared to other gods). I don't know if you go with there description in the companion but I think they do have a closer relationship with there mortals than many other gods do, and I don't think it's always there fault if a group of poor mortals get caught up in whatever insanity they unleash.
ReplyDeleteAnd when you are those people being loved, they are awesome. When you are an outsider looking in, they are horribly irresponsible and insane.
Deletethat's true for many pantheons, as you noted about the Trimurti themselves.
DeleteYep again. Ain't no pantheon that someone else doesn't think is weird and/or insane.
DeleteExactly I was just pointing out that because we have A Deva and a more Eastern balanced Band, our game has a vastly different perspective on who's the jerks who are getting involved in stuff they shouldn't.
